ZAKA-Villagers from Zaka were left shell shocked after waking up on Wednesday morning to the sad news of Chovonhayi Simeti (55)'s death after his lifeless body was found lying face down at Rudhanda Business Centre near the AFM Church by passers-by early in the morning yesterday with head injuries and bruises on arms and legs.

Simeti from Ruzembera Village under Chief Bota is a well-known socialite and well known grave digger from the area said a villager who confirmed the death to The Mirror on condition of anonymity because of the controversy surrounding the sad incident.

Masvingo Province ZRP spokesman, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the death which he said the Police were treating as sudden death until after the final post-mortem report is out as investigations are still underway.

"Simeti's death has shocked us all as this area will be much poorer without him. At most functions and funerals he would single handedly dig the grave and perform the MC's duties without any problem as he was good at throwing very funny jokes.

"At Edward's funeral yesterday (Tuesday) he was the MC and we were drinking beer with him and he showed no sign of illness nor did he pick up a fight with anyone. Some people are saying they left him drinking beer at Rudhanda Shops at around 8pm going home," said the villager.

It is said Simeti who was a special constabulary was a darling of the community and on Tuesday at Edward Mawadze's burial in Maroyi Village who allegedly committed suicide in Beitbridge after a dispute with his wife he was the main actor.

Most villagers who spoke to The Mirror suspect that Simeti was murdered and the area has of late witnessed quite a number of murder cases which have left villagers with more questions than answers.

Efforts to get a comment from Chief Bota were fruitless as his phone was not getting through until the time of posting.

Simeti is survived by his wife, who was believed to be in South Africa on business when the unfortunate incident happened, four children and three grandchildren.

Burial arrangements had not been announced as the body had not been taken for post-mortem to Bulawayo or Harare.//News.
