BIKITASmall scale farmers from Zimbabwe and South Africa held the second edition of the seed and food fair which aims to promote the production of indigenous crops and small grains under the theme 'Promoting our own local seed and culture' in Chiroorwe Village in Bikita from August 29 to 30.
The show was sponsored by Zimbabwe Small Scale Organic Farmers Forum (ZimSSOFF) in partnership with EarthLore an organisation from South Africa which saw 147 farmers from Gutu, Bikita, Zimuto, Shashe, Chimanimani and Zvishavane exhibiting their produce.
ZimSSOFF national coordinator Nelson Mudzingwa applauded Bikita farmers for reviving and conserving the indigenous seed and traditional foods.
"I would like to applaud the local farmers for boosting the growing of indigenous crops and small grains which are very healthy, I believe this will go a long way towards making Bikita self-sufficient in terms of food security," he said.
EarthLore field officer, Takalani Mashudu urged local farmers to encourage the growing of indigenous crops and small grains as it helps in conserving the ecosystem vis-a –vis the hybrid and genetically modified organism (GMO) seeds.
"EarthLore appreciates the hard work of farmers exhibiting local crops and small grains at this event. I hope they will continue to revive local traditional foods, knowledge and practices as the local farming systems and seeds have a positive impact on the environment unlike hybrid seeds," said Mashudu.
Bikita Seed and Food Fair programme manager , Method Gundidza said the annual fair is a platform for local farmers to exchange indigenous seeds and have farming knowledge intercourse to boost and diversify their harvests.
The first edition of the fair was held at Mabheka Gardens in Gangare Village in Bikita as well in August.//Agruculture
