BEITBRIDGE - Cuku Zulu (39) from Cape Town in South Africa has been ordered to pay $700 fine or serve 150 days in jail after being found in possession of an illegal firearm at the Beitbridge Border Post.
The case was heard by Magistrate Goodswill Mavenga last week. He had a Norinco pistol.
Zulu faced two counts of contravening section 182 (1) (a) of The Customs and Excise Act Chapter 23:02 'Failure to declare' and possession of a firearm without a license.
In the first count, he was ordered to pay $300 or alternatively 60 days in prison and $400 or 90 days imprisonment for the second count.
Prosecuting, Misheck Guwanda told the court that on August 26, at around 11, at Beitbridge border post, detectives who were conducting ferret duties received information that Zulu was in possession of a firearm.
Upon acting on the information, they approached him and conducted a search and found him with the pistol serial number 45081450 in his waist belt and 9mm x 37 live rounds of ammunition in his satchel.
