Residents fight new Zvishavane council chair

    Khulekhani Ndlovu.

ZVISHAVANE - There was a riotous scene at Zvishavane Town Council on Monday when scores of residents protested against the election of MDC Alliance Ward 9 councillor Khulekhani Ndlovu as the new town chairman.
The residents who were led by Janet Shava, the vice chairperson of the Zvishavane Residents and Ratepayers Association argued that residents from Ward 8 to Ward 10 did not pay rates to Zvishavane Town Council as their houses were under the jurisdiction of Shabani Mashava Mines.
MDC Alliance has seven councillors while Zanu PF has three Mundonga Jerita of Ward 4 was elected vice chairperson.
They said a councillor from that area would therefore not be the best city father for them since he or she did not experience the same problems as the residents.
Zvishavane town secretary Tinoda Mukutu said, "I did not know some of the protesters were inside the building but now it's 2018 a new era and we wish to start on a new page and support the new chairperson."
"We don't want critical positions in council to go to wards 8-10 because they are under Shabani Mine and not the town council. Their houses are not recorded at council so how do they know our issues? If council fails to stop that we are not going to pay rates," said Shava.
She added that Shabani Mine owes the biggest debt to council.
However the newly elected chairperson Ndlovu said he was going to deliver the best services to the residents.
"We are going to run around and deliver the best services as far as sewer, roads, and water are concerned. Let's work together in love , demonstrations or arguments cannot bring food on our tables," said Ndlovu.
The councillors who were sworn in are Takarangana Keta ward 1, Patson Taruvinga ward 2, Fatuma Phiri ward 3, Mundonga Jerita ward 4, Mago Tinashe ward 5, Jose Ferreira ward 6, Mecky Jaravaza ward 7, Itai Pasira ward 8, Khulekhani Ndlovu ward 9 and Andria Banda ward 10.
