GWANDA – Gwanda Provincial Hospital has created temporary structures for cholera patients in case there is an outbreak in the area, the District Medical Officer, Dr Andrew Muza has said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Rural District Development Council meeting last week, Dr Muza said the development is meant to avoid a situation whereby the province is caught unaware.
"We have managed to make temporary structures for cholera patients at our provincial hospital so that we are not caught unaware.
We however, do not have apparatus to check on collected cholera stools therefore we engage private doctors for laboratory services which is very expensive and we cannot afford to pay for every diarrhea patient," said Dr Muza.
He said that cholera has become resistant to the antibiotics that were being used hence the need to use a stronger antibiotic.
"We need to stay alert and we also need to prepare for Gwanda is not safe from cholera hence the need to prepare for eventualities."  He added.
