Gutu man flees with beasts wanted by Veterinary officers

CHIVHU – Chivhu Police is looking for a man from Gutu who allegedly drove off and fled with six beasts that the Veterinary Services Department had impounded and was preparing to destroy on grounds that they were coming from an area quarantined for foot and mouth disease.
The incident happened on Thursday last week.
Chikomba District veterinary doctor Tafadzwa Mashawi confirmed the incident and said the suspect Norman Makomonde, whose place of residence is not known is believed to be on the run.
Makomonde was ferrying the beasts from Gutu to Harare.
"Gutu District is under quarantine for active foot and mouth disease therefore the cattle, which had no movement permit or police clearance had to be destroyed. We have notified the police on the matter and investigations are underway," he said.
According to a Chivhu Veterinary Services report, Makomonde was hired by Johannis Tawadzana of Majuru Village in Goromonzi   to ferry cattle he had bought in Gutu to Harare.
The cattle had the 'F' brand of Chikwiza Dip tank in Gutu District.
Makomonde was intercepted by Police at a roadblock in Chivhu with six cattle and one carcass in his truck. He was detained at the Chivhu veterinary offices waiting for the cattle to be destroyed.
A veterinary officer Joshua Tarwekuona kept the car keys but somehow Makomonde managed to start the car without the keys and sped off from the vet offices with the cattle.
