Food outlets to be closed as cholera outbreak spreads to Buhera

BUHERA – The cholera outbreak that has hit Harare has now spread to Buhera District.
Buhera District Medical Officer, Dr Shelton Kwiri told The Mirror that there are two persons admitted at Murambinda Mission Hospital with cholera.
The patients were admitted on Friday and one of them is from Murairwa Village under Chief Nyashanu in Buhera. It is believed that the patients were infected in Harare.
"I can confirm that two cholera cases were recorded at Murambinda Mission Hospital where they have been admitted. The other person died of cholera and was buried in ward 19 where there is need to disinfect the area, in Mutiusinazita. We encourage people to wash their hands after using toilets with water and soap or ashes if they do not have soap.
"The patients were infected in Harare and have been admitted at Murambinda hospital since Friday. We went on to track all contacts of these patients and disinfected them including the whole of Murairwa Village, and Chikwanhira Village" said Dr Kwiri.
The disinfection process is spreading to all communities surrounding Murairwa Village, Chikwanhira village and ward 19 including treating their water so as to prevent the spread of the disease in the district. He said that people should not panic because the situation is under control.
Dr Kwiri said that his department was going to engage Buhera RDC and ZRP Murambinda on an awareness that will include the business community. Food outlets that do not meet the requirements of the health department will be closed.
The inspection will determine whether the food outlets should be closed or improved; this is all in connection with the need to prevent the spreading of cholera in the district.
