CHIREDZI – Police in Chiredzi have arrested a self styled war veteran who allegedly tried to defraud Chiredzi councilor and businessman Obert Ngwenya of R6 000 after claiming that he would link the former to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Elvis Twala (56) of Farm 38 in Chiredzi claimed that he was connected to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri and could use his  influence to assist Ngwenya in getting a sugarcane field in Hippo Valley Estate.
Twala ended up appearing before Chiredzi Magistrate Geraldine Mutsoto last Saturday facing one count of fraud.
The State alleges that Twala approached Ngwenya last Friday and told him that the State was in the process of repossessing some of the sugarcane plots  owned by Tongaat Hullet in Hippo Valley since the company is still keeping fields for exiled white people.
He told Ngwenya that he is a Zanu PF official who represents the president`s office and was closely connected to President Mnangagwa to the extent of visiting State House anytime. He also claimed that the President had assigned Oppah Muchinguri to deal with him in distributing the said sugarcane plots and under that program he had given Muchinguri $1 000 as a token. The state further alleges that after Twala demanded 6000 Rands from Ngwenya a police trap was set up at his shop along Lion Drive and he was arrested by the Police just after receiving the money.
Twala who was being represented by Daison Chirima of Chirima Legal Practitioners shocked the court after he distanced himself from arguments which were being made by the lawyer on his behalf in court. He later asked the court to give him time to find another lawyer which led to Chirima recusing himself in the case. Twala made a u-turn and tried to re-engage Chirima but it was unsuccessful.
Magistrate Mutsoto remanded Twala in custody to October 8, 2018 when he is expected to make a bail application.
    Doubt Phiri prosecuted.
