CHIREDZI – The Coalition Against Child Labour Zimbabwe (CACLAZ) has expressed shock at the alarming number of pupils who have dropped out of Zvido Zvevanhu Primary School in Chiredzi where 23% have stopped going to school this term.
Zvido Zvevanhu which is deep in the Zanu PF stronghold of Chiredzi North had 44 pupils abandoning school out of a total enrolment of 185.
Chiredzi District Schools Inspector Petronella Nyangwe said the school was one of the least developed in the province when The Mirror contacted her for a comment.
The situation at Zvido Zvevanhu came out during belated commemorations of the International Day Against Child Labour held at the school two weeks ago. CACLAZ  programs officer Gerry Chigavakava said the school was used as the venue for the event after noting its alarming dropout rate figures.
He said the dropouts are caused by child labour and failure by some parents to pay school fees. He said children work in the fields and as herdboys on farms. Some parents fail to pay fees because farmers don't pay their wages for periods of up to six months.
"We are commemorating the day because of the alarming dropout rate at this school. There were 185 pupils last term and the number dropped to 141 this. We are here to encourage parents to give priority to their children`s education. It must be remembered that child labour is a crime. We have many children who are farm labourers and herd-boys in this area.
"If parents fail to raise school fees they can approach our organisation for assistance," said Chigavakava.
Rwatipedza Gwande the School Development Committee (SDC) chairperson said enrolment continue to drop because parents were predominantly farm workers who go for six months without being paid.
Chiredzi North has a record turn out during elections and this is where Zanu PF does particularly well. During the just ended elections Zanu PF got 36000 votes against the opposition`s 3000.
