2 Fernvalley teachers jailed over Truworths debt

MASVINGO – Two teachers employed by FernValley Academy in Victoria Ranch , Masvingo have been sent to Mutimurefu Prison for an effective 60 and 30-day prison term respectively after they failed to pay debts owed to Truworths, a leading clothing shop.
The warrant of civil imprisonment was successfully obtained by Truworths against Rejoice Hove with a debt of $2 003 and Nyasha Ndanga with a debt of $1 361,70 who have been owing since 2014.
The court ruled on the warrants of imprisonment in November 2017 and January 2018 respectively but the two teachers made no arrangements to pay until the warrants were effected last Friday.
However, the two blamed their failure to honour their debts on their employer Lovemore Mufamba who has not paid their salaries for many months. Mufamba is the owner of Fernvalley School and a former councilor for Ward 10 in Masvingo urban.
The teachers were sent to Mutimurefu on Friday where they are now locked away. Unless they pay off their debts in full, the two will spent their full prison terms there.
"This therefore is to authorise you to take the body of Rejoice Hove and deliver her to the Officer in Charge at Masvingo Prison and safely keep her there until such time that judgment has been satisfied (60 days)," reads part of the warrant of civil imprisonment.
Hove's husband and relatives fumed at Mufamba who they blamed for the fate of the teacher. They demanded that he pay the debt. They also accused Mufamba of enticing Hove from a secure job as a teacher under the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and promising her greener pastures.
Hove left Chin'ai Primary School in Gutu to join Fervalley.
Mufamba wrote an affidavit confirming that he indeed was the employer of the two teachers. He undertook to pay off Hove's debt by end of day on August 31, 2018. However, despite the undertaking the teacher was sent to the cooler.
"I am the employer for Rejoice Hove who happens to be a debtor with Truworths and Topics  Masvingo branches.
"I have decided to commit myself to assist with the payments thereof in which case I intend to pay the Truworths account in total by the end of day on Friday 31, August 2018," said Mufamba in his affidavit.
