CHIREDZI – The stage is set for a bruising fight between Zanu PF and MDC Alliance for the post of Chiredzi Town Council chairman.
The two political parties are on a 50 – 50 in the council with Zanu PF having won four wards while MDC Alliance got three but are likely to get the support of an independent councilor in the eight member chamber.
The situation is made worse by the fact that almost all the elected councilors are eyeing the post.
MDC Masvingo Provincial Spokesperson Dust Zivhave said his party will use technicalities to win the Chiredzi chairmanship but they are still in the process of working out pacts with other winning councilors. He said they will sit down and choose one candidate as a party whom they will campaign for.
"Technically we are in the race to take the chairmanship post. They have four but if we work together with an independent we are also four," said Zivhave.
Returning Zanu PF Councillor for Ward 2 Obert Ngwenya said he will be guided by the party but is the most likely to challenge the post while new comer and youthful councilor for Ward 4 Liberty Macharaga also declared his interest for the post. Macharaga said he is the most qualified for the post in-terms of education.
Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association Chairman Jonathan Muusha Mupamombe said residents are expecting a listening council chairman who can lure investors to the town and also puts the welfare of workers and service delivery first. He said the new chairman should be well vexed with the urban councils act.
