GWERU – Sewerage ponds at Hwahwa Prison have been spilling untreated effluent into White Waters Dam, one of the main sources of water for the City of Gweru, a highly placed source has said.
The source who declined to be named for fear of reprisals said that the community sewer ponds that are at the prison have been leaking since the beginning of the current rain season and effluent has been flowing into White Waters.
Experts said that it cannot be ruled out that such spillage could be the source or one of the sources of lethal typhoid outbreak that has so far killed more than six people in Gweru.
The Prisons and Correctional services Assistant commissioner said, "I am still checking with the finance department because I believe they made payments."
The Minister of Health and Child Welfare David Parirenyatwa said he will be in Gweru today  (August 16, 2018) to give a comment.
It is understood that the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has so far issued two tickets for fine against Whahwa but the authority seems to have given up because the correctional service institute have neither compiled nor paid the tickets.
"It seems EMA has given up on the case because Hwahwa has neither the money to pay the fines nor to rectify the problem.
"EMA officials have been visiting Hwahwa but l think they have lost hope because even if they write tickets they are not paid and there is no money to make repairs at the pond," said the source
EMA Midlands Provincial manager Benson Bhasera said that he needed to check if Whawha was issued with any tickets.
"I am not sure if we have issued Whawha with any tickets so l will have to check with our officers first and will give you the response," said Bhasera
Gweru City Council Public Relations Officer, Manford Gambiza asked for time to compile a response from relevant departments.
"I will forward your questions to relevant departments and will respond after getting advice from them," said Gambiza.
