Target Kopje man steals, sells girlfriend’s car

    TATENDA CHIZU

MASVINGO - Bernard Berman (33) has appeared at the Masvingo Magistrates' Court facing theft charges for allegedly stealing and selling his girlfriend's car.
Rumbidzai Matare (28) who works as a till operator at a large wholesale shop in Masvingo and stays in Target Kopje was in love with Berman.
The State led by Liberty Hove said that on December 8, 2015 Matare gave Berman her motor vehicle to have it repaired in Harare and brought back on the same day.
The car was a Nissan  X Trail.
Matare forgot her vehicle registration book and her driver's licence in the glove compartment.
In Harare Berman allegedly took the vehicle to Enterprise Car Sales where he sold it to Misheck Gwara and was paid US$4 000. An agreement of sale to that effect was made and the vehicle, its registration book, photocopies of his and Matare's passport photos surrendered.
Berman had allegedly told Gwara that he was selling the car because he had an emergency. Gwara in turn sold the car to Phylis Primrose Ngwerume. After selling the car, Berman allegedly switched off his contact numbers and relocated to an unknown place.
Matare became suspicious when Berman failed to return and reported the case in Masvingo. Investigations were carried out leading to the recovery of the vehicle from Ngwerume when she attempted to renew the vehicle licence at Zinara Highlands.
Berman was arrested in Victoria Falls on January 17, 2016 where he had relocated to.
Berman said he did not steal the car but had to go to Zambia with his sick son.
The matter will continue on August 17 2018.
