CHIREDZI – A group of armed robbers pounced at Simrac Wholesalers in Chiredzi on Monday before escaping with a cash-in-transit vehicle that had just arrived to collect cash for overnight safe-keeping.
The robbers also went away with a pistol, cellphones and $11 000 cash.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said she was yet to receive the report but Simrac Chiredzi Branch Manager Evans Muchirahondo confirmed the robbery.
He said the robbers who were armed with pistols arrived at the wholesale at around 6:30 in the evening as staff was balancing books before the arrival of Guardian Security Cash in transit vehicle. They ordered everyone to lie down in a corner and forced the manager to surrender the daily collections at gun point.
Just as they did so the Guardian Security vehicle arrived and the grades were caught unaware as they were immediately disarmed.
"The robbers forced our doors open just after we closed and ordered everyone to lie down while pointing guns at and assaulting them. They came into workers office and ordered me to give them cash before they opened our safe and took a cash box which belongs to a Mukuru branch which is at our building. A vehicle belonging to Guardian Security arrived during the robbery and guns were pointed at security guards before they were disarmed. They drove off in the vehicle," said Muchirahondo.
