Gwanda Catholics empower youth through marimba music

GWANDA-The Roman Catholic Church has embarked on a programme to empower the youth through marimba music which they perform at various gatherings in and around Mat South Province for a fee.
Munyaradzi Chibuswa who resides in Bulawayo and a Catholic as well teaches the 15 member group twice a week to play the traditional instrument free of charge at Marendale and this started in 2014.
"The marimba band was Father Fikile Dlamini's initiative in a bid to empower the youth. When l came here l continued with the vision of my predecessor and supported the band together with my colleague Father Proud Mugabe," said Father Christopher Ngwarayi who is the Priest-in-charge at Gwanda Catholic Church.
He added that the idea is not for the youth to make a lot of money, but enough to sustain themselves from the hirings that they get at various gatherings like wedding ceremonies, prize giving days and the Bulawayo World Music Day with the senior band.
"The training is for free but soon we are looking toward offering the training to nonCatholics for a small fee. Our challenge now is that we don't have enough marimba kits and the band focuses on Catholic music though they are now getting into secular music like Chimkoko,' said Chibuswa.
