Create consortia for big jobs, ZBCA president

Create consortia for big jobs, ZBCA president
MASVINGO- Companies in the built industry in Masvingo have been urged to create consortiums to have the capacity to bid for big jobs like the dualisation of Beitbridge-Harare Highway which passes through the Province.
"Do not watch opportunities pass through you because of selfishness, do not work alone because you may not have the capacity to bid for big jobs like the dualisation of the highway, Great Zimbabwe University projects, canal construction in the low veld and Tugwi Mukosi Dam.
"If you come together you will be able to bid for any job rather than behaving like tennis fans who just watch the ball swinging from one end to the other. Grab those opportunities by coming together," said Eng Ransom Nherera the Zimbabwe Building and Constructors Association (ZBCA) president during an interactive dinner at Flamboyant Hotel last week on Friday.
The event which has become a permanent feature on ZBCA calendar brings together contractors, manufacturers and suppliers of materials and services to discuss issues affecting the sector.
Nherera added that companies should not mourn about lack of capacity because they can complement each other by contributing in different areas like providing expertise, machinery and finances in order to be able to bid for bigger projects which are beyond the capacity of one company.
Nherera also said local companies should be united to the extent that no jobs should be done without them participating.
"Create a liaison committee that meet from time to time with the relevant authorities so that there are no jobs that are done without your involvement, make enough noise together so that your voice becomes an authority.
"We are also working hard to ensure that the Construction Bill which has been on the table for the past 10 years becomes a law as it protects the indigenous players from unfair competition. At the moment any job that is valued at over $1m is open to companies even outside our borders but we want that to be amended as we feel it was done without our input," said Nherera.
He also suggested that the Government should support the built industry the same way they have done to agriculture through inputs like fertiliser and tractors from Brazil for the farmers.

Masvingo district administrator, Roy Hove who was standing in for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Josaya Hungwe also weighed and urged those in the built industry to register with the association so that they speak with one voice.
'I would like to call upon all contractors in Masvingo to register with ZBCA so that you can achieve strength in numbers and be effective when carrying out your lobbying and advocacy activities. Registration also enables Government to monitor and control the quality of works through ZBCA leading to a win-win situation for contractors, policy makers and clients," said Hove.
The consultative dinner was also attended by ZBCA chief executive officer, Chrispen Tvsarai, Midlands Chapter chairman Dr Tapiwa Manzungu, Masvingo Chapter chairman OtiniereTavirai, N Richards director who is ZNCC Masvingo chapter chairman, Andrew Chekani and Jadecon operations manager Ephraim Museva.
Representatives from ZB Bank, BancABC, TIP Insurance Brokers and members of ZBCA from Masvingo also attended the event.//Business News
