CHIREDZI – Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is in the process of installing 33 solar powered street lights along Msasa Road in Chiredzi as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The installation of the solar lights is part of its wider program which will see several selected towns benefiting.
Efforts to get a comment from ZESA were fruitless but Chiredzi Town Secretary Charles Muchatukwa confirmed the development and said ZESA informed them of the project and requested council to identify a road for the project.
He said council is just supervising the project while the power utility is sponsoring everything.
"I can confirm that we were selected as one of the beneficiaries in a program in which ZESA is installing solar powered street lights in various towns and cities as part of their corporate social responsibility. As council we only identified the road which will benefit and we will supervise the project while ZESA is meeting all costs. We are not yet in a position to divulge figures involved since we are also yet to be told by the power utility" said Muchatukwa.
Chiredzi Town Council Engineer Weisley Kauma said work is now in progress with 33 holes already dug on the 1km long road which links Chiredzi CBD and the main bus terminus. He said the ratio being used is one light per every 30 metres.
