Parents petition Gov over Vic High head

    TAWANDA HOMBA

MASVINGO – More than 100 parents at Victoria High in Masvingo have written a petition to the Provincial Education Director (PED) complaining against poor standards and alleged maladministration at the school.
The petition dated June 23, 2018 and addressed to Zedias Chitiga was also copied to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Sylivia Utete-Masango Public Service Commission headoffices in Masvingo and in Harare, the District Schools Inspector for Masvingo Ishmael Chigaba and Vic High SDC chairman Burton Nerupiri.
The parents called upon the Ministry to immediately remove the head, John Muzamani who they blamed for the dropping standards which have left the once revered school among the worst boarding institutions in the country.
"We demand the removal of the current head whose leadership has failed resulting in the continuous decline of the standards of Victoria High," read part of the petition.
Chitiga said was not reachable on his mobile.
The parents said failure to remove Muzamani is to condemn current and future students to an unbearable life at the school and dim prospects of passing external examinations.
The parents listed 10 items against the head including poor pass rates. Vic High has one of the worst pass rates for O and A Level  results for many years now. In 2018, Vic High was ranked at number 27 in the A Level results after it was beaten by many rural schools including Rudhanda, Marirangwe, Maungwa, Chitonhora and Mpandawana.
They also complained against dilapidated buildings that are not maintained including boarding houses that have no windows. They also mentioned indiscipline among teachers who abscond lessons and sell wares at the school, lack of independent audits, alleged inflated invoices for sports and schools trips, illegal procurement of school uniforms and their late delivery, bullying of pupils by others, poor security at the school that see children sneaking out of boarding and failure by the school to co-operate with parents on the welfare of children.
Muzamani  said he never received anything so he can not comment.
The school chairman Barton Nerupiri  was not picking his phone.
