Water crisis hits Shabanie Mine suburbs

ZVISHAVANE – Suburbs under the administration of Shabanie Mashaba Mines (SMM) have gone for four weeks without water and residents are calling for the company Chief Executive Officer Stephen Nyagura's head.
The problem has been compounded by the fact that the same suburbs which are Maglas, Niltownship, Birthday and Hillview have also run for a number of months without power.
Residents who fear a possible outbreak of water-borne diseases have mooted a demo against mine management.
Sources told The Mirror that what irks the residents most is that they are paying their water bills to SMM every month but it appears that SMM is in turn not remitting the money to the local authority which supplies the suburbs with water.
The residents pay $17 for water per month.
Residents who spoke to The Mirror on condition of anonymity said Nyagura had no respect or regard for them.
"Nyagura acts like a king and we are like his subjects. He has neither respect nor regard for us. However, the time has come for us to teach him a lesson as a group has been formed to stage a massive demo against him and his management", the resident said.Local news
