Gov hunts for 195 school heads in Masvingo

MASVINGO – The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has started interviews for school heads to fill in 195 primary and secondary posts that are vacant.
Patrick Zumbo who is the national spokesperson for the Ministry confirmed the development in a telephone interview with The Mirror and said that the Public Service Commission human resources provincial head, the provincial education director and a provincial head from another Ministry were through with Zaka, Gutu,Chiredzi and Bikita and the team was now doing Chivi District without elaborating.
Masvingo PED, Zedius Chitiga said the posts have been vacant for more than 10 years while some of the schools never had heads since they were established and the vacancies are due to failure by the Ministry to replace the head in time because one has to be a deputy in order to be appointed a headmaster. There are very few schools with deputy heads especially secondary schools because they have less than 600 pupils which is the threshold for such a post according to Government policy. For primary schools there should only be 281 pupils for the school to have a deputy head.
Chitiga could not disclose the actual grades of the headmasters since the grading system is still going on, he said the Ministry is looking for teachers with a diploma in education and a degree. The interviews are being conducted at District Better Schools Programmes Zimbabwe centres.
Although the Provincial Education Director, Zedius Chitiga would not give figures, it is understood that the Ministry is hunting for 78 primary school heads and 117 secondary.
Sources told The Mirror that the Ministry has a dilemma in the area of secondary education where only 61 school teachers have applied when Government is looking for 117. There are however overwhelming applications for primary school posts with 232 teachers having expressed an interest.
"I cannot give numbers because I am in the middle of interviews, I will have to check the figures," said Chitiga before he hung up.
The vacant posts are for primary schools Bikita 15, Chiredzi 9; Chivi 12; Gutu 17; Masvingo 13; Mwenezi 2 and Zaka 6.
For secondary schools there are 12 vacancies for Bikita; 11 for Chiredzi; 29 Gutu; 18 Masvingo; 15 Mwenezi and 19 for Zaka.
Twenty-nine of the applications received for primary school posts are from Bikita, 14 from Chiredzi, 44 from Chivi, 35 from Gutu, 27 from Masvingo District, 9 from Mwenezi, 41 from Zaka and 33 from other provinces.
