    GMB officials tour Masvingo Depot



    Board pays 95% of farmers
    Grain uptake reaches 1994/95 record
    Empty bags now available at 60c

    MASVINGO – Senior officials from the Grain Marketing Board Headoffice in Harare were in Masvingo on Tuesday where they toured facilities at the Masvingo Depot.
    After the tour, the officials who included corporate and communications officer, Joseph Katete, corporate and communications manager Muriel Zemura, Eastern Region manager Tavonga Makuvara, regional quality assurance officer Joseph Sanyangore then went on a tour of  Gutu Depot on Wednesday.
    In Gutu, they were accompanied by Taurai Chikanda the Masvingo Depot manager.
    The team met workers at the Depot and gave them an update on the grain levels and other issues to do with the company. The GMB season runs from April to March every year and the new season begins next week.
    Katete who gave the update said as of last week the local maize intake stood at 1.198. 055 million tonnes of white maize; 6 123 tonnes of yellow maize; 185 799 tonnes of wheat and other small grains at 92 771 tonnes. This level of intake was last achieved in 1994/5 season.
    More than 95% of farmers who delivered their grain within reasonable time were paid.
    The workers were also told that Government had availed over $36million during the 2017/18 season towards acquisition of grain handling and storage resources.
    At Masvingo, the depot has acquired 388 000 empty bags for packaging of maize which are now available to farmers for the 2017/18 harvest at a cost of 60c. 
    The 54 year old Masvingo Depot has a holding capacity of 15 000 tonnes, said Chikanda.
    "Farmers are urged to deliver maize with a minimum moisture content of 12.5% in order to avoid disappointment of having grain being turned away," said Sanyangore.
