Weekly train to bring S African tourists to Masvingo

GWANDA – There are plans to divert tourists visiting Victoria Falls from South Africa  so that they can spend a day at the Great Zimbabwe monuments.
The arrangement is being made with Rovos Luxury Train which brings tourists from Capetown to Victoria Falls every Friday so that tourists disembark in Gwanda and are ferried to Masvingo to see Great Zimbabwe monuments.
Gwanda Cultural Artifacts Association Chairman, Raymond Mauba confirmed the development in an exclusive interview with The Mirror and said plans to create a marketing network with Masvingo are under way.
Rovos Luxury Train ferries tourists from South Africa to Victoria Falls and makes a two-hour stop in Gwanda. The train starts from Pretoria or Capetown in South Africa and returns from Victoria Falls every Tuesday.
If the arrangement is agreed upon it means that the tourists will arrive in Gwanda early and then they will make a trip to the Great Zimbabwe monuments by road and then return to continue with their Victoria Falls trip.
Mauba said that Rovos Train management has agreed with the idea and they are waiting for finalisation of the issue with local players in Masvingo. He said that he is now engaging tourist players in Masvingo and in particular officials at Great Zimbabwe Monuments to work on trip arrangements.
Rovos Rail Train manger Renolda Motha confirmed his interest on the Great Zimbabwe Monuments trip and said he would market the heritage site to the tourists.
"It is my wish to see the whole region benefiting from these tourists. Masvingo and Gwanda are in the same region, they are only demarcated by colonial boundaries,"said Mauba.
He called for intense marketing of Masvingo through videos and pamphlets.
"We market Gwanda to our passengers, the same can be done with the monuments in Masvingo. This is possible since our regular journeys between Victoria Falls and Durban are run on a consistant basis. Naturally the scenery varies greatly," said Motha.
