Soldiers attack bus crew in Chiredzi

MALIPATI – Machipisa Chiwara, the proprietor of Chiwara Bus Service has reported soldiers based at Chikwalakwala for attacking members of his bus crew that was on its way to South Africa on Thursday last week.
He said apart from attacking the crew Shephered Matambo, a driver and Thomas Macharaga a conductor who are now admitted at Chikombedzi Hospital, the eight soldiers also smashed bus windows and deflated tyres and the matter was reported to the Police. They are alleged to have also assaulted some passengers.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson, Charity Mazula promised to look into the mater. She said she had not come across the matter because she was not in the office at the time that the incident is said to have happened.
Director of army public relations Lieutenant colonel Alphios Makotore was not reachable for comment.
The Mirror understands that there were 60 passengers in the bus and they probably wanted to illegally cross into South Africa. There are also reports that there is a lot of bribe taking at the Chikwalakwala Border.
Chiwara told The Mirror that the bus crew was seriously injured.
"I can confirm that two crew members of my bus were seriously injured after some soldiers attacked them during the night. The soldiers ordered all passengers out of the bus at Chikwalakwala but the crew angered them by saying that it was night time and therefore not safe for them to come out. They started beating people and smashing windows, they also deflated tyres and terrorised passengers," said Chiwara.
Chiredzi South MP Rt Brigadier Kallisto Gwanetsa said the area where this happened is out of reach but he heard the matter through grapevine. local news
