    Roman Catholic appoints new bishop for Chinhoyi

    CHINHOYI – The Roman Catholic Church has appointed Rev. Fr. Raymond Mupandasekwa as the new bishop of Chinhoyi Diocese.
    The appointment was made by Pope Francis through a statement released at 1pm on Saturday last week.
    Monsignor Mupandasekwa replaces Bishop Dieter B. Scholz who retired in February 2016.
    Monsignor Mupandaswekwa was born at Bondolfi in Tamirepi, under Chief Charumbira in Masvingo, on April 28, 1970 and was ordained priest on August 4, 2001. Prior to his new appointment he was the Regional Superior of Redemptorist Fathers in Harare.
    He is the fourth bishop appointed from the Dioceses of Masvingo. Father Mupandasekwa will be addressed as Monsignor until he is ordained as a bishop at a date to be announced soon.
     He entered the Major Seminary of Chishawasha in Harare in 1990 where he completed his philosophy studies. In 1996, he joined the religious congregation of the Redemptorists. He made his perpetual vows in 2001, and on August 4 of the same year he was ordained as a priest in Hatcliffe, Harare.
     "Today, 30 December 2017, His Holiness, Pope Francis, has appointed Rev. Fr Raymond Tapiwa Mupandasekwa as the new Bishop of Chinhoyi," read the statement from the Pope.
    After his ordination, Monsignor Mupandasekwa worked as a parish vicar from 2001 to 2005 in Mabvuku and Tafara in Harare.
    He obtained the degree of Masters of Philosophy in Theology (specializing in Canon Law) at St. Augustine's College of South Africa and became Parish Priest of St. Gerard's in Borrowdale, Harare. Between 2007 and 2010 he undertook studies of specialization in Rome and Licence in Moral Theology at the Pontifical Alphonsian Academy between 2007 and 2010.
    He was Pastor of St. Fidelis in Mabvuku and St. Alphonsus in Tafara and Professor of Moral Theology at the Seminary of Chishawasha from 2010 to 2015. He was also Professor of Moral Theology at Holy Trinity College in Harare from 2012-2014; Professor of Canon Law at Holy Trinity College between 2014 and 2015 and Vice-Rector of Holy Trinity College from 2015.
