    Poor Omega Hungwe threatens journalists

    TAWANDA HOMBA

MASVINGO – The Constitution of Zimbabwe is clear; journalists must carry out their duties without fear or favour but this is not so in the wisdom of new Zanu PF deputy political commissar, Omega Hungwe who ordered scribes not to write some of the things she said at a public meeting in Masvingo on Saturday.
"You must not write what I am about to say here. If you do, my name is Omega Hungwe, if you didn't know," thundered Hungwe to the small group of local scribes attending the inter-district meeting held at the Polytechnic.
Hungwe who told the meeting that she was a political commissar for Harare Province for 20 years before she was elevated to deputy national political commissar warned journalists not to write on how Zanu PF organised itself around cells and polling stations.
She said a similar talk landed her in trouble with MDC T Parliamentarians when it appeared on ZTV.
The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists secretary general Foster Dongozi said she has no right to castigate journalsits because their rights are well protected in the supreme law of the land.
"That is madness. We have President Mnangagwa who has pledged his support for journalists to operate in a free, safe and secure environment. Freedom of expression is enshrined in the country's Constitution. For the record, anybody who wants to impose silly rules on journalists should instead do that in their bedroom which is their private space. In terms of media relations, that politician has scored a spectacular own goal," said Dongozi.
"Iwe zvandava kutaura izvozvo usazvinyora. Hamuna kuzvihwa, ndikazviona ini ndinonzi Omega Hungwe kana musingandizivi," she said amid applause from party delegates.
Hungwe who said she is an in-law married in the Minister of State for Masvingo, Josiah Hungwe's family said the secret is that the cell is the voters' roll for Zanu PF and the cell register is the voters' roll.
"Cell ndiyo voters' roll yeZanu PF. Cell register ndiyo voters' roll for Zanu PF. You will not vote in the primary without being in the cell register," said Hungwe.
