Doctor Sambona pulls man from the jaws of death

MASVINGO  – A Harare Poly student on attachment in Masvingo only identified as Evans has a Harare medical doctor, Innocent Sambona to thank for saving his life after he dived into a swimming pool while drunk resulting in him nearly drowning.
The incident happened at around 9pm at a prize giving day party held by a Masvingo media house at Mutirikwi Lake Shore Lodges near Lake Mutirikwi recently.
Evans' heart had stopped when he was pulled out of the swimming pool and there were high chances that he could become a cabbage if he survived.
For some minutes Evans did not emerge from under the water after taking the plunge and one of the media staffers Trevor Nyagura with the assistance of others used a long pole to lift him from the floor of the pool and then pulled him out of the water.
He was laid on the pool side and everyone thought he was dead as he barely breathed and looked totally lifeless.
Fortunately Dr Sambona who had popped in at the lodge for drinks was within the vicinity and he rushed to the scene and told the crowd that Evans still had a chance and he started compressing the man's chest for almost 25 minutes assisted by other people at the party.
He did mouth to mouth resuscitation and suddenly Evans coughed out a lot of water. He started breathing and was rushed to Morgenster Hospital about 20km from Masvingo where he was admitted for four days
Dr Sambona, said Evans had just two more minutes to live if there had been no intervention.
"His heart had stopped pumping and water had gotten into his lungs. We had to shock his heart to start pumping again and force water out of his lungs. He was lucky, two more minutes without help would have meant certain death or at the best a cabbage," said Dr Sambona.
