Pick n Pay opens Gweru Branch, employees 71

GWERU - Pick n Pay, one of the biggest supermarket chains in Zimbabwe has opened a new branch in the Midlands town of Gweru.
The official opening on Thursday brought with it some spinoffs as 71 people were immediately recruited for employment in an economy suffering one of the highest unemployment rates in the world.
The Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund and Midlands Children's Home also enjoyed windfalls after receiving $1 000 and $2 000 at the opening respectively.
The new branch is strategically sited on a spacious space near Fairmile Hotel. While 71 workers were recruited from Gweru, 21 for specialist areas were drawn from other branches.
Pick and Pay managing director Malcom Mycroft said that the branch is the 56th in Zimbabwe and they took a decision to open another branch in Gweru because residents have been supportive of Pick and Pay business.
He said Pick n Pay employs more than 4 500 workers throughout the year.
"We have opened a new branch in Gweru because the city is exciting and it has a lot of space which allows us to extend our business. We have recruited 71 employees from this town which shows that the opening of the supermarket has managed to create employment." said  Mycroft.
