CHIREDZI – Construction of a new $15 million University with a special emphasis on Science is starting in Chiredzi this month.
The University whose name shall be Lowveld University is fronted by the Conservatory Trust, which is a non-governmental organisation that deals in education.
Funding for the construction is through a Build Operate and Transfer agreement done through several local banks.
Conservatory Trust managing director Absolom Chikoto confirmed the development in an interview with The Mirror and said it had become necessary to build a fourth university in Masvingo Province.
The University is going to start with seven faculties; namely Medicine, Humanities and Education, Culture and Heritage, Science, Engineering and Technology, Natural Resources and Ecological Sciences as well as Maths.
The University has been offered land by the Ministry of Lands and Rural Resettlement near South Eastern College in Chiredzi and construction should be starting any time now. Chikoto told The Mirror that a university charter and all other paper work is almost complete.
A board which will run the school is already in place.
"We spent some months mobilising resources and putting together the required paperwork. We are through with the university charter and we were given land by Ministry of Lands and all the planning for the project is now complete.
"We will have seven faculties and in future we will expand to Mwenezi and Beitbridge. We have put in place an executive comprising of experienced people who will run the affairs of the university. Construction work will start early next month" said Chikoto.

    2. Kunyepa, a BOT in university education is not feasible. Many universities with collateral and demonstrated success such as the Catholic University who are positioned in Harare with great enrolment potential have failed to raise funds.Again our local financial institutions do not have appetite for these projects. With the meagre fees paid in local universities, the investor must be prepared to wait for 50 years to make a sensible return

    3. Great idea. But it is my fervent hope that it will exist by another name, though. "Lowveldt" is a bit lame to me. And Last Mazambani, while you are very right, there is need for those involved to stop thinking about our local finance institutions and spread their welcome to external funders and they are many. The reason current developing universities are failing to complete their projects stems from the fact that they are Church run. When the church funds run out the project stalls. If lowveldt is a state university, government will have a vested interest and will assist in linking the project with its vast network of contact worldwide.
