CHIREDZI – Residents of Chiredzi are anxious to meet the new Minister of Local Government Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo to raise issues on alleged corruption at the local town council.
The residents complained that there were several damning reports on corrupt activities at Chiredzi Town Council, and these they said were swept under the carpet by former Minister Saviour Kasukuwere.
Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association Chairman Jonathan Muusha Mupamombe told The Mirror in an interview that a report from an investigation by a team led by Engineer Nhamo has not been acted upon. He said Kasukuwere ignored calls from residents for him to act.
Mupamombe said a high powered delegation of residents will soon be organised to go and meet the new Minister over corruption allegations.
"We have high hopes that the new minister will solve these problems at our local authority. There are issues of corruption and mismanagement by councillors which were totally ignored by Kasukuwere. We are organizing a trip to visit the new minister so that we present them to him" said Mupamombe.
Chiredzi Town Secretary Charles Muchatukwa accused residents of raising issues that got recommendations from the Ministry and had long been resolved.
He said the investigations produced a report and made recommendations that did not nail councillors or officials and his council did everything the Ministry asked them to do.
