Avenues School makes inroads in Harare

HARARE – The Avenues School, a new kid on the block close to the Central Business District in the Avenues Area in Harare has made tremendous growth with enrolment jumping from 28 students in 2016 to 205 today.
The school has become a huge convenience particularly for parents in the highly populated Avenues area who resorted to sending their children elsewhere in the high and low density suburbs of the sprawling city of Harare because of a shortage of schools in the area.
The Avenues School which is located along Livingstone Avenue near David Livingstone School offers places from preschool to A Level and apart from providing a convenience for parents in the area it is also an attraction for parents in the various suburbs around Harare as its location is central.
On September 29, 2017 the Avenues School held its Prize Giving Day attended by parents, pupils and some dignitaries.
Speaking at the function Jonathan Chiwawa who was the guest honour commended the progress that the school was making. He said that apart from the immense growth in student numbers there has also been notable achievements in infrastructure development. In particular, he commented the investment made into ICT.
"I am impressed by the investment you have made into ICT in such a short period of time. Continue to invest in ICT as it enhances effective learning and teaching. A good school should develop well rounded students who can fit in the ever changing ICT world and face the future with confidence," said Chiwawa.
He also commented the students for not being found loitering in the city during school hours as happens with other schools in the CBD.
Chiwawa hailed the school for immediately adopting the new curriculum introduced by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
"I have been told that the new educational curriculum encompasses continuous assessment with a lot of projects to be done. This enables the learners to marry theory and practice. The future economy requires more entrepreneurs than job seekers and I urge you to take the studies seriously," said Chiwawa.
He challenged parents to make a positive contribution to the school by being innovative and bringing ideas to the school. He urged them to pay fees in time and help their children with homework.
The school head, Robson Riweya said the school recorded 88% pass rate at O Level and 91% at A Level in 2016 and the school has twinned with Mafikeng University in South Africa for children who do Computer Science at A Level.
He also thanked the parents for their timeous payment of school fees as this enables smooth running of the school.
