2 clerks swindle Masvingo City Council of $174 000

    MIRROR REPORTER

MASVINGO – In one of the biggest internal frauds to hit Masvingo City Council in recent times, two acting revenue clerks have appeared in court after they fraudulently prejudiced the local authority of $174 000.
Fred Tota (46) and Bosswell Barura (49) who are being represented by Collen Maboke of Ruvengo and Maboke Partners and appeared before Magistrate Takawira Mugabe at Masvingo on Friday.
It is the State case that the two would enter into the local authority's Promum Accounting System and divert money received from other sources of revenue to clear dates owed by ratepayers known to them. The two would then receive favours from the ratepayers whose debts were cleared after they paid nothing.
The crime is said to have been committed for a period running from October 2016 to July 31, 2017.
The offence came to light when income for a particular day was compared with the end of day banking summary and some anomalies were noted at the Revenue office.
An audit trail from the Promum Accounting System was run and the transactions by the two accused were noted leading to the discovery of the alleged crime.
Magistrate Mugabe gave the bail of $50 each and the case will continue on December 12, 2017.
     Edmond Mapope prosecuted.
