MASVINGO – A burglar notorious for making several break-ins into Belmont Chambers and Zimbabwe Court, one of the biggest buildings in Masvingo threatened to jump down to his death from the floor after being cornered by detectives with Police dogs on Sunday morning.
Tinashe Gwenzi (28) pleaded guilty to numerous burglaries in the building including the theft of $7 000 worth of imported clothes at Miracle Touch Boutique early this year.
Gwenzi broke into four different shops in the building within an hour before he was caught by the Police on Sunday.
He only abandoned his threats to commit suicide after detectives assured him that his crime was too small to warrant death. He retreated from the edge of the roof which is at the corner of Josiah Tongogara Avenue and Hofmeyer Street and surrendered to the Police.
A Mirror reporter witnessed the scene, as the designing department of the newspaper is housed at Zimbabwe Court.
He appeared before Provincial Magistrate Langton Ndokera on Tuesday facing four charges of unlawful entry and theft.
Gwenzi who entered the building armed with an axe co-operated with detectives and was literally singing as he provided information on how he was stealing from the building. He said that his colleague escaped when detectives stormed the building.
The Police recovered a stripped CCTV, a laptop, several cellphones and goods stolen from Belmont Chambers offices, Miracle Touch Boutique and Delicious Delight Restaurant.
Gwenzi got into trouble when Councillor Babylon Beta who has offices at the building came in at 7am and heard disturbing noise downstairs. He went round the street checking and Gwenzi ran out of Delicious Restraunt after seeing the councillor peeping from the front window.
The councillor alerted the public as he ran to cover the back of the building from where thieves would normally enter. He kept guard until detectives with dogs arrived from Masvingo Central Police station and stormed the building thereby cornering Gwenzi.
