ZVISHAVANE – Some 25 medical doctors, including specialists have been on an outreach programme in Zvishavane-Runde from November 1 to November 14 2017 where they provided free medical treatment to communities.
The outreach which saw at least 5 000 people attended to was facilitated by the MP for Zvishavane/Runde, Fred Moyo and the doctors were operating from clinics dotted around the district.
This is the first medical outreach that includes specialist doctors in various ailments like heart diseases, cancer and gynaecological complications in Zvishavane rural. The doctors were being led by former Midlands Medical Superintendent Dr Milton Chemhuru.
Moyo said the main purpose of the outreach is to relieve pressure on the small number of doctors in the district who can barely visit clinics in the outlying areas because of work at the district hospitals.
It is hoped that the programme shall run after every three months, said Moyo.
The other prominent doctors in the team are National Aids Council CEO Dr Tapiwa Magure and Dr Kenney Nyamande from Natal Province, South Africa who managed to source a drug consignment that will last six months in all the targeted clinics.
Organ specialist Dr Kenedy Nyazike from the United Kingdom also took part in the outreach for two days.
"We had a number of specialists including a paediatrician (children's doctor) who moved from one clinic to another while each of the 12 clinics in the district was manned by two doctors," said Freddy Moyo.
Dr Nyamande said in their outreach they have encountered high numbers of hypertension and arthritis patients in many of the rural clinics. He said about 60 percent of the cases encountered were of the two ailments while cancer cases were few in rural areas.
