CHIKOMBA - The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Silvia Utete Masanga has deplored the housing crisis in schools and called on communities to come together and build decent houses for teachers.
Speaking during a tour of schools in Chikomba on Thursday last week, Masango said it not healthy for teachers to share houses adding that the ideal is for every teacher to have his or her own house.
She said there have been many problems that have been caused by the sharing of houses including violence where some teachers ended up being killed. She said there are situations where teachers eventually fall in love because of their accommodation situation and when they break up, the end is nasty.
She said there were situations where as many as five teachers were sharing one house and the only separate thing was their bedrooms. They shared the lounge, toilet and kitchen, she said
"Every teacher must have a house but you find a situation where by five teachers are sharing one house. We must realise that this is a very dangerous situation because it creates conflicts that can even lead to death," said Masango during an address at Chivhu Hall.
