The sky is the limit for Gokomere High basketball sensation

MASVINGO- Having bagged a number of awards, Trevor Njinga, a student at Gokomere High School is aiming at making a breakthrough into the national U20 basketball team where he was once called for trials.
Njinga started playing basketball at 13 for the juniors at Mucheke High School where he was learning. He did not stay long with the juniors as he was quickly promoted to play for the senior team.
Speaking to The Mirror he said, "I have passion for basketball, it's my hobby and I want to play and get to the national level and beyond so that I can inspire other young talents who also have the same vision as mine."
At 17, Njinga has bagged a number of awards in his short career among them the coveted Inter – Catholic Competitions Achievement Award in July 2016 as most valuable player of the tournament, Inter – Provincial Basketball Certificate of Participation June 2016 in Bulawayo, Under 17 Inter – Provincial Basketball Competitions medal June 2017, Top Schools Basketball Certificate of Participation July 2016 at Gokomere High and Zimbabwe National Youth Games medal held in Hwange, Matabeleland North in August this year.
He paid tribute to his parents and his school teachers for the invaluable support that they give him although he sometimes finds it difficult to balance sports and academic work as he is now preparing for the final A Level examination.
Meanwhile, the upcoming basketball star faces other challenges in a bid to make his dream come true like lack of funding and sponsorship.
"The main challenge is lack of support, sponsorship and training facilities," said Njinga.
However, he thinks more basketball courts and provision of adequate training facilities should be some vital measures which the local authority should put in place.
