Government gets $7m for Jeka Bridge

    ALLIEWAY NYONI

MBERENGWA – The Government has sourced $6,8 m to be used in the  rehabilitation of Jeka-Tandavarai Bridge destroyed by Cyclone Denio early this year, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural development Dr Joram Gumbo who is also Mberengwa West MP has said.
He was addressing people gathered at the commemoration of YA FM Radio's second anniversary.
Gumbo said this in response to calls by chiefs for the urgent rehabilitation of the bridge that links all the four Mberengwa constituencies; North, South, East and West. He said Government had managed to source about $6.8 m although he did not say from where.
The Minister added that the rehabilitation of the bridge which is along Mwenezi River will also create a significant number of jobs for the unemployed locals.
"The Government, in its commitment to normalise the road transport situation here has secured $6,8m for the rehabilitation of Jeka Bridge. Surveyors have almost concluded their report and anytime soon the project will start," he said.
The destruction of the bridge created greater risk of  attacks on pupils from schools like Chegato and Ruzengwe by crocodiles as they use unsafe points to cross the river. Chief Mposi who lost a brother and other villagers when the bridge was destroyed said his people are devastated that the rainy season is just around the corner while no meaningful  progress has been made.
"The government must treat the matter with urgency because this bridge has bad memories for my people after losing our loved ones and with the rainy season drawing close fear grips us because we may witness new tragic incidents," he said.
People from as far as Mapiravana, Danga, Masarira, Chimwe and Magavakava among other villages make use of the bridge to access crucial facilities at Jeka Business Centre such as the hospital, registry office, abattoir and shops.
