MASVINGO-The third edition of the Dr Simon V. Muzenda Golf Tournament tees off  this Saturday and will be played over 18 holes on individual stableford format and over 100 players from around the country are expected to take part.
The tournament is organised by the Dr Muzenda Sports Foundation which also organises the Annual Gutu Mpandawana Marathon whose main objective is the development of sport at grassroots level for the underprivileged.
"This year's tournament will be much bigger as we are expecting over 100 players as compared to 81 who took part last year and in addition there will be tennis and cricket tournaments as we are trying to broaden the event to include other sporting disciplines. Next year there will be more sporting disciplines and there is a possibility that the tournament will be held in other cities since the late VP Mzee was for the whole country.
"For logistical reasons this year it will be played over one day for all the disciplines including the handover of donations to selected beneficiaries," said Ephraim Mashingaidze the programme coordinator.
"The Foundation which has since been registered will hand over five golf kits to Victoria Junior to add on to the five we donated last year to fulfil our pledge of 10 golf kits per school, the next beneficiary will be announced in due course," said Captain Vitalis Muzenda, the VP's son who is also organising the event.
The Foundation donated 10 golf kits to St Don Bosco Primary in Mucheke in 2015 when the tournament started and they are meant for the development of the sport at grassroots level.
Cpt Muzenda added that this year's sponsorship package for the whole tournament has gone up from $7000 last year to over $13 000 this year due to price increases witnessed in the past weeks after orders had been placed.
"We placed orders for T-Shirts, but when we went to pay for them they had changed the prices two fold, the same with trophies, trays and medals for tennis and cricket tournaments," he said.
"We are expecting over 60 players aged between 4 and 13 years to take part in the tennis tournament which will be held on Friday on a round robin format culminating in the finals on Saturday at Masvingo Sports Club. Players will be drawn from Kyle Prep, Victoria Junior, Helen Mcghie and Marry Mark from Chiredzi among others," said the tennis coach Privy Farisai.
Five teams will battle for honours in T20 format in cricket and these are Masvingo Sports Club, Mucheke Cricket Club, Scorpion Cricket Club, Hungwe Cricket Club and Lowveld Warthogs. The games started with preliminary rounds in September and the finals will be played this Saturday, said Emmanuel Dube the cricket tournament coordinator.
Winners will walk away with a floating tray and some medals. sport news
