Chikomba tops Province in veld fires

MASH EAST - Chikomba district is a bastion of veld fires in Mash East, accounting for 33% of the total land devoured by fires in the province in 2017.
Mash East had a total of 62 156, 9 hectares affected by fire and of that Chikomba accounts for 20 879, 65 hectares, according to statistics availed to The Mirror by Mash East EMA education and publicity officer Astas Mabwe.
These statistics are for the period stretching from August 1 to September 25 2017.
Those found guilty of starting veld fires are fined $5 000 and so far 15 tickets have been issued and 6 dockets opened.
Mabwe said Chikomba has topped the fire statistics since 2012 and she attributed the problem to the land tenure system in the district where most of the plots are self contained and plot owners have little capacity to make fireguards for themselves.
Seke district is on second position with 17  469, 98. On third position is Marondera with 9 932.
Goromonzi has 7 596, 9.Hwedza has 3 038, Murehwa has 1 697, 62 and Mutoko has 773, 99. Mudzi is on eighth position with 404, 72 and UMP is on the bottom with 363, 6 hectares.
Mabwe said most of the veld fires are a result of land clearing and her organisation has been carrying out trainings at various Police stations and so far they have covered Majuru, Goromonzi, Beatrice, Featherstone, Chivhu and Juru Police.
