Foot and mouth affects Mwenezi Agric Show

MWENEZI – Cattle exhibition was not there again at Mwenezi Agricultural Show held last week because of the foot and mouth disease that has for several years now dogged Masvingo Province.
The District Veterinary Services Officer, Dr Thokozani Mswela confirmed the ban in a telephone interview but refused to give details.
"It is true cattle had been banned. This is a sensitive matter which you can discuss with my authorities," said Mswela.
The ban was also confirmed by Masvingo Show Society Vice chair Solomom Mpofu who however said they were working on modalities to have few farmers allowed to exhibit.
"We are going to engage the veterinary department so that local farmers close to Rutenga where the show is held are allowed to showcase their cattle," said Mpofu.
He added that farmers should not be discouraged as there are a lot of other products to display.
A local farmer from Mwenezi East, Takura Ndlovu said the ban on cattle exhibition had affected many farmers.
"Mwenezi is a cattle area and when they ban exhibition of cattle what do they expect us to do. We are not going to attend and they should not cry foul on the low turnout.
"The disease was detected some months ago and they should have found  solutions to contain the disease," said Ndlovu.
