Bank chief to grace Rio Tinto’s 40th Jubilee

ZHOMBE – Rio Tinto Zhombe High, one of the country's academic and sporting power houses will celebrate its 40th Jubileee and Prize Giving Day on October 6, 2017 and Steward Bank Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lance Mambondiyani will be the guest of honour.
Rio Tinto High head Joel Kwashira confirmed the development in an interview with The Mirror last week.
Mambondiani is a former Rio Tinto student.
Kwashira said that the school which is 24km from Kwekwe in Zhombe has invited former students whose contacts it has and is extending the same to all who passed through its corridors.
Rio Tinto is a mining school found in 1977 by the Rio Tinto Foundation to cater for Rio Tinto Mine workers' children.
"The school was started by a company which used to mine gold in this area. The objective was to cater for mine workers' children who would go for long distances in order to get to the nearest school," said Kwashira.
The first enrolment at the school was in 1977 and Rio Tinto is the first boarding school in Zhombe.  The Mine ran the school for the first five years before handing it over to the community.
Rio Tinto has been a powerhouse in sports and academics with its O and A level results featuring among the country top 100 schools.
The school has an enrolment of 705 students and 34 teachers and of the 34, four are former students.
"We are expecting all our former students to attend because we will also be forming a new Rio Tinto Old Students Association committee. Former students have helped us a lot in the past and we go back to them again for help," said Kwashira.
