500 guests attend GZU fundraising dinner

MASVINGO – The Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) fundraising dinner held at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel in Masvingo last Friday was a big success with over 500 guests including Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa attending.
The dinner was hosted to raise funds for the construction of a Convocational Hall. Mnangagwa who was the guest of honour was full of praise for the leadership of Vice Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo who he said had expanded GZU in record time.
He said Professor Zvobgo had shown innovation, creativity and resourcefulness when he went about expanding the University at a time when Government has no financial resources to support the building of structures.
Mnangagwa who was joined by many dignitaries including Cabinet Ministers and captains of industry at the dinner said GZU was a case study for other Universities and he (Mnangagwa) understood that managers from other Universities were being advised to go and see how GZU was pursuing its development programme.
Mnangagwa led the way in donating to the project by paying $7 000. This was followed by many other donations and pledges.
"I must say I am impressed by this and would like to register Government's full support for the project. What is truly breathtaking is its resourcefulness, innovativeness and boldness that has gone into its inception.
"Management has realised that Government's purse is overwhelmed with equally compelling obligations and have chosen to 'think outside the box' and make the University's construction a reality.
"Such shrewd thinking can only come from a united and collective leadership. I have it on good authority that other universities have been challenged to visit GZU and learn how to virtually grow a University in a short space of time," said Mnangagwa.
GZU council chairman, Simplisious Chihambakwe described Zvobgo as a workaholic  who always surpasses targets.
"Prof Zvobgo is an amazing man, if you tell him to walk he runs and if you tell him to run he flies, his leadership skills are unparalleled and this has seen the University growing to be where it is today despite the economy not performing well," said Chihambakwe.
The occasion was also graced by Masvingo Urban MP, Daniel Shumba, Minister for Liaison on Psychomotor Activities in Education, Josiah Hungwe, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Development for Cropping, Davies Marapira, Masvingo Mayor, Hubert Fidze, Town Clerk, Adolf  Gusha, Dr Sylvester Maunganidze, Reformed Church University VC Prof Wiseman Magwa, Masvingo provincial administrator, Fungai Mbetsa with Dr Fredrick Kasese as director of ceremonies.
Renowned poet and director of ceremonies Tatenda Chinoda aka Dhege also provided entertainment.news
