Zanu PF kingpin evicted from Mucheke hall over $66 000 debt

MASVINGO – The abuse of public buildings can go unnoticed for a long time.
Feared Zanu PF activist, Gilbert Chikwata was evicted from Mucheke Old Community Hall popularly known as the People's Shop on Tuesday after it was realized that he has been renting out the place to more than 16 vendors since 2009 thereby collecting $66 897 that he put to his own use.
The hall is owned by Masvingo City Council and the local authority has for the last eight years got nothing from the building.
Chikwata was using the hall under an organization called Masvingo Informal Traders Association (MITA) and he is the president. Many people said he was so feared because many people believed that he had powerful Zanu PF people behind him.
On Tuesday the messenger of court swopped on the building and evicted Chikwata and all his tenants. The tenants turned against him as some of them had paid him rent for 12 months in advance.
The Director of Housing and Community Services Levison Nzvura confirmed the developments.
Chikwata was evicted from the building followinga High Court order.
The Mirror spoke to him on Wednesday and he said that the matter was being dealt at higher levels in the party.
"Something is happening on the ground. The projects that I ran belonged to people high up there and they are doing something about this development," said Chikwata.
