CHIREDZI – A frustrated war veteran who is among farmers who occupy Tongaat Hullet sugarcane plots illegally is alleged to have threatened to shoot the company's security guards after he and his colleagues were barred from selling their harvest to the sugarcane giant.
Tongaat has vowed that it would not buy sugarcane from 221 farmers who illegally occupy its land and to effect that resolution it dispatched security guards to monitor the illegal farmers' fields so that they would not use other farmers's growers'codes to sell their crops.
Biggy Muroza who is an illegal farmer in Hippo Valley after President Mugabe declared the same lost his cool after he went ahead and cut 18 bundles of sugarcane from his field but failed to sell them.
Muroza is said to have threatened to shoot the guards first before shooting himself.
The incident was confirmed by senior employees at Hippo Valley and Tongaat is said to have since withdrawn the guards.
"We have some of our employees who were threatened by Cde Biggy in Section 6 after our security was deployed to monitor the movement of his sugarcane. He is the only one who went ahead and cut the cane" said a senior employee who requested not to be named.
Muroza said he was not making empty threats. He said he will cut all the cane and sell it to already established farmers and if that fails he will remove the whole sugarcane crop and embark on paprika or maize farming. He also said the 18 bundles in his field are worth over $10 000.
"I went ahead to harvest sugarcane in my field but Tongaat deployed security to monitor its movement. It`s true that I threatened to shoot their employees and the threat still stands. I will shoot them and kill myself maybe that is how all other farmers will get freedom," threatened Muroza.
