Vendors, Mwenezi RDC clash over use of bush toilets

MWENEZI - Vendors selling their wares at the main bus stop along Masvingo-Beitbridge High Way at Rutenga have clashed with Mwenezi RDC after they were forced to clean the area including bushes around it that are littered with human waste.
The bus stop has no toilets and travellers use the nearby bushes for toilets thereby making the place a "great mess", said a vendor who declined to be named.
On Thursday last week Council ordered the vendors to clean the place or be removed from the bus terminus. The vendors who spoke to The Mirror complained that they cleaned the place without proper utensils for the work and they had to remove pamper and human waste in newspapers using their bare hands.
They said this posed great risk to their health.
Mwenezi Rural District Council (MRDC) executive officer for Agriculture and Environment Kudzai Sirewu confirmed the cleaning exercise and said for now there is no option but to use the vendors to clean the area.
He said the problem will be addressed soon.
"For today let us use brooms and rakes until we get the problem properly addressed. If you refuse to clean then we close the place and no one will be allowed to sell from here," said Sirewu.
"The toilets at the business centre are in a mess and no one can get inside and spend a second. Council is not cleaning the toilets," said Junior Shumba, a vendor.
The vendors threatened a demo against council.
"They know this problem as we have always complained against the situation. We are going to stage a demo in the coming months if they do not come to address the issues of toilets and water here," said another vendor.
