Scores go into hiding as Chiredzi men are forced into circumcision

CHIREDZI – The office of the District Administrator (DA) in Chiredzi and the Police are investigating reports that the Tsonga, one of the main tribes in the district is forcing all men in their area to go into circumcision camps.
The Mirror understands that about 30 people have run away from homes as they are being forced to get circumcised regardless of their tribe or beliefs.
Chiredzi DA Ndeya Nyede said he had heard the reports and his office was working together with law enforcement agents to establish the truth of the allegations.
He said the reports were received from people in villages 1 to 8 of Fair Range Resettlement Area as well as in Chipimbi.
Julius Haurovi who stays in Fair Range told The Mirror that he had run away from his village and escaped to Zaka after men from Tsonga attempted to kidnap him and his sons so that they would go for circumcision which is taking place at Mkwasine River.
He said a group of about 10 people approached him while he was walking to his neighbour`s homestead and the group tied his hands from the back and told him they were going with him to the camp. He said he was only released after pleas.
He said despite releasing him, the group continued to come to his place singing and threatening to take him away until he decided to run away to Zaka.
"I am hiding in Zaka where I sought refuge together with two of my sons. I stay in Fair Range and the group made several attempts to take me to the circumcision camps arguing that because I stayed in their area, I must take part in their traditional rites. I am not the only one affected as there are more than 30 others who have run away from their homes," said Haurovi.
He said some of the ring leaders forcing people to go to the circumcision camps are Majaradha, Moses Munyika and Hlongo Mashava.
Efforts to get a comment from Majaradha were fruitless as his mobile number was not reachable by the time of going to print.
"I can confirm receiving such reports from people who said they are on the run after attempts to kidnap them for circumcision," said Nyede.
Haurovi further said the situation is tense as those people who are circumcised at hospitals are in turn fined $20 by camp leaders for snubbing the traditional process.
Chief Tshovani, Felix Mundau said those who are forcing people to undergo traditional circumcision in his area must be arrested since the process must be voluntary.
