Mwenezi High scoops Secretary’s Merit Award

MWENEZI – Mwenezi Government High School has been conferred with the Secretary's Merit Award for 2016 (Secondary Schools Category) after it beat all schools in Masvingo Province.
Considered for the award were the school's efforts in providing libraries, classrooms and e- learning opportunities to its students.
For its achievement, the school was awarded a plaque in lieu of the Secretary's Bell and E-Learning equipment that consists of 45 laptops, a standard projector, interactive board device and white board donated by FBC Bank.
Other areas taken into consideration for the purpose of giving the award were competent implementation of the curriculum, effective development and execution of school plans and inclusive and transparent governance.
Speaking at the official presentation of  the award, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Sylvia Utete Masango said schools should provide conducive teaching and learning environment for quality learning outcomes.
"Every learner needs to exit the education system with relevant skills, functional knowledge and fundamental values that are necessary for the school graduates to navigate their environments with confidence and competence.
"Zimbabwe desires socio-economic development and the education sector is the vehicle through which success can be assured. Education is a key agent of change and transformation," said Masango.
She also hailed the school for being in the fore front in the implementation of the new curriculum while many other schools were failing to understand the new curriculum framework.
"The school has managed to embrace the updated curriculum with an open mindset, with learners being exposed to technical or vocational skills which empower them for the rest of their lives.
"Mwenezi Government High School is implementing the new curriculum in compliance with the recommended Ministry's phased approach. Beginning January 2017, Forms 1, 3 and 5 have taken on board the new learning areas.
"Mwenezi Government High School appears to have understood the essentials of the new curriculum in advance as I am reliably informed that before the onset of the new curriculum, the school was already offering a robust, broad-based curriculum with 24 subjects," said Masango.
The headmaster of Mwenezi Government High School, Cuthbert Chuma thanked the parents for the support they rendered in order for them to attain the award.
"Our aim is to ensure that our children acquire the necessary competent skills that make it possible for them to find their way in life after school. and also be of practical value in our community," he said.
The school which started in 1981 has an enrolment of 1 057 students of whom 549 are girls and 508 are boys. It has 46 teaching staff and 19 none teaching staff members.
