CHIVI – Friends of Chivi Ward 8, a charitable group has donated a tonne of goodies to villagers from the Ward who were affected by the floods caused by Cyclone Dineo early this year.
There was singing and dancing as 44 households from Nzviyo Village under Headman Denga in Chief Madyangove received the goodies on Saturday last week.
The consignment included clothes, shoes, blankets and 80kg of Maheu. The handover ceremony was held at Conley Chaminuka's makeshift tent. Chaminuka's homestead was washed away by flash floods on February 26.
Present at the handover ceremony was Chivi District Administrator, Vafias Hlavati and Godfrey Gwainda who is a director with Simbisa Brands in Harare represented the Friends of Chivi.
"I am delighted. This is a shot in the arm for us since we were left with nothing after the floods," said Dorica Sithole (70).
Hlavati acknowledged The Mirror for exposing the plight of the villagers resulting in the Good Samaritans coming to their aid.
"I pay tribute to The Mirror for highlighting the plight of the flood victims which prompted Gwainda to appeal to his friends for assistance on behalf of the villagers," said Hlavati.
"In addition to the reports in the newspaper, I actually received a call from the Editor of The Mirror narrating the plight of the villagers. I promised to do something.
"I went on to mobilise my friends in Harare and we got this consignment I expect more goods to come," said Gwainda.
The floods left a trail of destruction and Ward 8 was the most affected in Chivi with 44 villagers losing identity documents, clothes, household goods goats, chicks and other domestic animals," said Hlavati.
Villagers also narrated how they narrowly escaped death in the raging floods.
