    Mwenezi outclasses defending champions, Chidyamakono
    Gutu High sails through in the boys category

    MASVINGO - Mwenezi Government High have won the right to represent Masvingo province U17 girls at the Copa Coca Cola finals to be played in Bindura next week after getting the better of Chiredzi based Mhlanguleni on Friday last week at Hwiru Primary in Gutu by a solitary goal.
    In an action packed soccer match, Letwin Hlungwani secured the ticket to the national finals for her team after she fired the ball in the back of the net in the first half.
    Mwenezi coach Taurai Mangena said that he was very happy with the performance of his team and also to be crowned the provincial champions after having done so in 2015.
    "I was thrilled with the performance of my team as they showed confidence and team work to defeat Mhlanguleni.
    "I am so proud to be champions of this prestigious tournament," said Mangena who promised to bring the trophy home from the finals pencilled for July 21 and 22.
     "We are going to the national finals not to add numbers, but to win the trophy this time," added Mangena oozing with confidence.
    When asked for a comment by The Mirror, Mwenezi Sports Director Alexio Tirivavi, who could not hide his joy expressed happiness with his team's performance whom he said have performed very well in the tournament so far but said they will continuously train for the finals as they aim to bring back the tournament winners' accolade.
    "I am very happy and proud to lead such a successful team. We have performed very well in the tournament so far but I hope the girls will keep the good standard in Bindura at national level and we are working on serious and continuous training with close monitoring on our players fitness and diet until the day of the finals. We need to win," said Tirivavi.
    In semi-finals, Mwenezi beat the 2016 national defending champions Chidyamakono 1-0 while Mhlanguleni thrashed Tabudirira 4-2 in penalties.
    Mwenezi, is set to tussle it out in group stage against Vainona and Mpopoma at national finals according to the draw released at the launch.
    Meanwhile In the boys' category, Gutu High sailed to the national finals after defeating stubborn Pamushana 1-0 in a match played at Maungwa High school on Wednesday.
    Gutu took an early lead with Simbarashe Chikwetu firing a screamer in the 13th minute which booked them a place in the finals to be played in Bindura next week.
    Douglas Makumbe, Gutu coach was delighted withhis boys' performance and assured the province that the boys will fully represent Masvingo for a greater good.
    "I am elated with the performance of the young boys as they displayed marvellous football and managed to defeat Pamushana. I promise the province that we are going to battle it out to bring the trophy back home," said Makumbe.
