MASVINGO – Robbers are terrorizing the Southern region with the latest attack reported at Stop-Over Supermarket just outside Masvingo on Monday evening where a 17-year-old was seriously injured after being shot at close range.
A bar attendant Jimmy Tava Matambo who got involved in a tussle with one of the robbers was stabbed in the head and upper abdomen with what appeared to be a blunt object. Fana Tsikai, a driver at the shop was also injured after he was allegedly hit with the butt of a gun.
Masvingo Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said confirmed the attempted robbery.
This is the fifth robbery in the Southern Region in four weeks. Prominent Zvishavane businessman, Eddie Khan is battling for life after being shot at his service station last week, DocZim Service Station in Masvingo was robbed two weeks ago, Mukumba Bus Company was robbed in Zaka three weeks ago and there was another robbery in Chiredzi four weeks ago.
Sources said the robbers entered the supermarket at around 7pm when cashiers were counting their daily takings and went to an office where they thought they could find them.
Incidentally Matambo came from the bar to collect a generator and was attacked by a robber left at the door to play guard. The robber was overpowered by Matambo who has a big frame and the former ended up screaming for help although he had already stabbed Matambo twice.
The screams alerted the robbers inside who thought that they had been surrounded, they abandoned their mission and shot David Dhuwa as they escaped and the bullet went through his buttocks and came out through the lower abdomen.
    The robbers went away empty-handed.
Dhuwa who is an artisanal miner at Good Seven Mine is admitted at Masvingo General Hospital. The boy had just entered the shop after he had arrived from Morningside where he had gone to buy vegetables.
Matambo said he hid behind a diesel pump at the service station as the armed robbers escaped from the shop and they dashed into the night.
Tsikai and Matambo were treated and discharged at Masvingo General Hospital.
The Mirror is reliably informed that the place had had no electricity for four days when the robbers struck.
"The cashiers were busy counting their money inside the shop when the robbers arrived and forced their way in. They went straight to where they thought the cashiers were.
"They found nothing and that is when I arrived and the other robber who was on guard attacked me with screwdriver when I was opening the door.  I overpowered him and gave him a thorough beating sending him down screaming for assistance. That is when his colleagues came out of the supermarket running and brandishing a gun thinking they have been surrounded," said Matambo.
