Zvishavane cops beaten for blocking car taking sick child to hosp

ZVISHAVANE - A group of traffic cops rued the day they joined the force after an angry crowd battered them on Tuesday for chasing at high speed and blocking a vehicle rushing a sick child to hospital.
The vehicle belonging to Tinashe Maidza was coming from Mberengwa and ferrying the sick child to Zvishavane District Hospital when Maidza came into a roadblock at Dadaya turn-off. Maidza told the cops the emergency situation of the child but the cops insisted on taking their time to check the vehicle at the expense of the sick child. That did not go done well with Maidza who sped off towards Zvishavane.
Efforts to get a comment from the Police were fruitless. The traffic cops took a Toyota funcargo and chased Maidza. They caught up with him and blocked his way at Bulawayo Road Bus Stop known as Number 1 Station in town.
"Touts and vendors noticed that there was a sick child in the vehicle and pleaded with the cops to allow the driver to proceed. The cops were adamant and insisted that he had broken the law," said an eyewitness Marry Mushayavanhu.
The crowd became agitated and used stones and logs to beat up the cops. One cop sought refuge in Maidza's vehicle but was pulled out and assaulted.
Riot Police descended on the scene but all the people had already dispersed. The Police then resorted to arresting any Fun Cargo in sight.
"They (touts and vendors) have started a serious war and we will deal with them heavily," said a Police officer who was part of the rescue team.
